By painting in swirls, swaths of color,
sweeping lines and fragmented shapes, the Futurists used a complete
lack of form to suggest movement. Barely discernible in each
of Umberto Boccioni's works is one clear figure: a face in "Head
+ Light + Surroundings," a newspaper headline in "Charge
of the Lancers." These solid objects help make sense of
the chaos Boccioni surrounds them with. Upon careful observation,
"Head" becomes a portrait painted before the backdrop
of an open window, while "Charge" depicts an advancing
cavalry in battle. Boccioni paintings evoke a sense of excitement,
live action and movement.
