Before his death in 1974, Adolph Gottlieb
created a body of "primitivist" abstract art that emphasized
the barbarism of nature over the sophisticated, bourgeois sensibilities
of the modern world. In a strange way, Gottlieb's works were
reminiscent of the primitive cave paintings and Ice Age art of
early man. Pieces such as "Ascent" are crude, incoherent
messes of paint on canvas, rough works that speak to the emotions
rather than the rational intellect. Gottlieb was a postmodernist
slightly ahead of his time.
