- Along with his friend and contemporary
Wassily Kandinsky, Czech painter
Frantisek Kupka instilled a sense of geometry and Cubist structure
in the burgeoning Abstract school of art. Kupka and Kandinsky
called their style Orphism, and while their legacy failed to
take root with the next generation of abstract painters, Orphist
works such as "Cathedral" (Kupka, 1871) and "Cossacks"
(Kandinsky, 1866) remain fresh, original and inspiring more than
a century later.
