Born in 1880, Franz Marc was dead at the
age of 36, killed on the battlefields of Verdun. His art evokes
the innocence of the years just prior to the First World War.
Marc was fond of natural motifs, in particular animals, and his
pieces often focused on the physical form and shape of an animal
to the exclusion of any sort of background. In "Little Yellow
Horses," for example, Marc has zeroed in on three horses,
with only a tiny corner of green suggesting the surrounding world.
