Born in the Netherlands in 1606, this outstanding artist brought
Dutch painting to prominence and changed the nature of art criticism.
The earliest known evaluation of Rembrandt's art was found in
Hugen's autobiography. Although Rembrandt began his career with
very little recognition, he persevered to become perhaps the
most well known (and loved) artist of his era. Reading Biblical
texts for inspiration and subject matter, Rembrandt enlightened
many to the personal nature of one's relationship with religion.
Each individual painting emphasizes a different mood or perspective,
resulting in one of the largest and most diverse bodies of work
in the European tradition.
